Part 2: Building a Culture of 1-Degree Shifts

In Part 1, we explored how small adjustments in patient care can enhance the overall experience and create long-term loyalty. But patient care is only one piece of the puzzle—your team plays an essential role in making these shifts sustainable.

Small changes thrive in a culture where everyone is involved. By bringing your team into the process, you create an environment of continuous improvement. By giving your staff ownership in shaping these changes, you’re not just tweaking processes—you’re strengthening engagement, morale, and overall efficiency.

5 Small Shifts to Improve Team Engagement

1. Encourage Ownership of Roles

Dr. Beth Seidman encouraged her peers from the stage at The Connection 2025 to “focus on empowering your team so they can work autonomously and set and reach their own goals!”

When staff feel empowered, they perform at their best. Giving them ownership over something builds trust and loyalty. Have a new vendor? Dedicate one staff member to provide the office with a breakdown and review of the benefits and how to incorporate them into the patient experience or process.

2. Start an Office Group Chat

Office group chats are perfect for quick communications or sharing a relatable GIF to express the current mood. A simple “thank you” or shoutout in the chat can reinforce positive behaviors and boost morale. Keep the chat light and relatable, reserving shop talk for in-person discussions.

3. Create Small Growth Opportunities

Foster an environment of development by creating small growth opportunities, such as assigning a "Team Lead for the Day." Rotate this role among staff members to lead morning huddles, which helps build confidence and leadership skills. Additionally, consider other opportunities like having team members spearhead small projects, present new ideas during meetings, or lead training sessions on specific topics. These experiences empower your staff, enhance their skills, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

4. Let Staff Determine Office Incentives

Involve your team in shaping office incentives. Whether it's long lunch breaks or a day off, encourage them to identify small, meaningful rewards that enhance their work experience. Ask them!

5. Make Time for Feedback

Create space for regular feedback sessions. Encourage open discussions and commit to implementing at least one suggestion each month. Consistently acting on feedback fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

Big success doesn’t come from massive overhauls—it comes from small, strategic shifts made consistently. One-degree shifts ensure that even if all else fails, it's hardly a step back.
